Duif's Place:
International Directory of Chess Teachers
Alphabetical Listings R - Z

Listings by location and specialty are available on the Directory Page. There is also a Summary Showing All Teachers with Name, Location, and Language.

This project is in memory of International Master Boris Kogan.

Information in the directory is free to both teachers and students. Teachers are listed by location (including online and e-mail lessons), by specialty (learning disabled children, team coaching, openings, languages in which lessons are given, etc.), and alphabetically by last name. Duif's Place also includes a chess page for kids, and one for parents of young players.

(Note: inclusion in the Directory does not represent an endorsement of any kind by Duif or Jade River Designs. This directory is simply being provided as a convenience to chessplayers around the world. All information is provided by the teachers and has not been validated.)

My approach is simple and successful... I stress UNDERSTANDING, not memorization! This encourages creative development and flexible thinking. The result is a pleasurable journey that points the way toward a firmer grasp of winning patterns and techniques.

Additional Comments from the Teacher
I won a gold medal on the second board of the Canadian women's team in 1984 at the chess olympics. I teach chess to children since twenty years (Montreal chess association "Echecs et Maths" trainer for the young champions of Alsace in France).Even though I played sometimes in the Olympics I have the same opinion than the Polgar sisters and believe that young girls have to play in mixed tournamants to improve their play.I don't like segregation in chess.

Additional Comments from the Teacher
Eric Schiller offers individual and group instruction in the San Francisco area, at the Internet Chess Club, and via online conferencing and email. National Master Eric Schiller has been providing individual and group chess instruction for over 20 years, is the author of over 100 books on chess. He has acted as coach of the United States delegation to the World Youth Championships (1996, 98) and has been coach of American teams at the World Youth Team Championships. References are available on request. Dr. Schiller teaches at several schools in the Half Moon Bay area, including Hatch Elementary, Farallone View Elementary and Cunha.Intermediate schools.

Prospective students should be at least 8 years old, with a good understanding of the basic rules of the game. Serious students should take lessons at least once every 3 weeks; those seeking just to improve their game a bit can benefit from lessons once every 2 months. Regular students (at least 2 lessons per month) receive assistance at tournaments, oversight and review of tournament and online games, and other benefits.

If you would like to become an active supporter of chess in your local school, please contact me. I've run several programs, mostly in the elementary schools. If you're thinking more in terms of serious tournament training, be sure you sit down with your selected coach and work out a lesson plan/schedule together from the outset. Progress very much depends upon the time put in by the student and teacher away from the lesson as well.

I am not a titled chess player. What I am is an excellent teacher with a great love for the game. I have helped numerous beginners and novices from age 6 to 60 learn the game and improve their play. I have my share of club trophies and have won prizes in national events in my class. But what I treasure most is seeing the light of understanding grow in the eyes of the students I have taught -- and then to see them succeed in putting that understanding to work in their games. I teach a regular novice class each 1st Tuesday at the Baton Rouge Chess Club and have a regular list of private students. I’d be glad to work with you as well. A list of references can be provided on request (i.e., students who liked my lessons! Ha! Ha!)
