VSB is a Super Grandmaster tournament in the Netherlands. A mix of both well-established superstars and some of today's rising young players, it should provide some great chess. In addition to PCA World Champion Garry Kasparov, the event includes a young Russian that many believe to be Kasparov's "heir apparent, 23 year old Kramnik. But keep an eye on two other young Grandmasters, Lautier from France (who beat Kasparov twice last year!), and Holland's J. Piket. And who's that player with his fingers stuck in his ears? Topalov, one of the strongest Bulgarian GMs playing anywhere, is famous for his tournament style. He sits rock still at the board, never getting up while the game is in progress and, yes, usually with both fingers stuck in his ears to achieve "maximum concentration." This event is wide open.
In round 8, though, Lautier was able to draw with Kasparov, while Topalov defeated Gelfand, moving Topalov back into a tie for first position with Kasparov. Short and Anand also moved up by defeating their opponents, while Seirawan scored a point against Piket. Going into the last round, Kasparov, Topalov, Anand, and Short all have a chance at first place.
In the final round, Topalov scored over Piket while Kasparov defeated Gelfand, placing them both at the top of the standings, with Topalov getting the edge on tiebreaks due to his defeat of Kasparov in round 1. Anand drew with Lautier, finishing a strong second half that left him tied with Short for 3-4 place. American Yasser Seirawan had a surprisingly strong showing, finishing in 5th place. Dutch Champion and former World Title Challenger Jan Timman continued his difficult year by finishing last, behind both Gelfand and Piket.

This very strong event featured superstars like Kasparov, Kramnik, Judit Polgar, Anand, and more! Held in Spain.
The young American champion Gata Kamsky, who left the next day to play for the FIDE World Championship against 44 year old Anatoly Karpov, scored a full point today against rival Visnawathan Anand from India, knocking Anand out of the top spot in the final standings. The very strong Topalov of Bulgaria only managed a draw against the Spaniard Illescas Cordoba, while Viktor Kramnik drew with the current Spanish champion Shirov, leaving Topalov and Kramnik tied for first. Meanwhile PCA Champion Garry Kasparov won with the black pieces against Gelfand, putting Kasparov in a tied for 3rd/4th place with Gelfand. Judit Polgar drew with Ivanchuk. Illescas Cordoba was probably the surprise of the tournament, finishing with an even score ahead of Gelfand, Kamsky, and Ivanchuk, all higher rated. 19 year old Judit Polgar finished about as expected.
