Team Standings at the end of Round 5
We're now one-third of the way through this 14 round event. As the tournament progresses, the match-ups for each round are made based on how well the teams are doing, so that teams at the top of the standings play others at the top of the standings, while those lower down play other teams doing about as well. This keeps the match-ups in each round exciting and competitive.
The big event for round 5 was the match between 1st place China (ranked 30th at the start of the event) and 2nd place Russia (ranked 1st at the start of the event). Russia decided not to use Captain Garry Kasparov this round, but led with a line-up of Kramnik, Svidler, Bareev, and Rublevsky. The Russians outscored China 2.5-1.5, to edge into first place. The only decisive game came on the 4th board, where Rublevsky defeated Peng.
England defeated the Netherlands 2.5-1.5, while Armenia 1 scored 3 points against Kazakhstan, and Spain defeated Sweden 2.5-1.5,
The USA defeated Greece 3-1, and Yugoslavia defeated Finland 3-1. The Seychelles team received a 2 point bye for the round.
Italy scored a perfect 4-0 for this round against Barbados, Angola defeated Haiti 4-0, and Thailand went 4-0 against Liechtenstein. Malaysia jumped up into the top half with its 4-0 defeat of Mozambique. In an island match-up, Bermuda defeated the US Virgin Islands 4-0.
