Complete Team Standings
at the end of Round 11
Russia has followed a typical match strategy for the Olympiad, scoring 21 points in their first 7 rounds (75% !), and then coasting in with 15 out of the next 6 (62.5%). With a 2.5-1.5 victory over the US in Round 13, their Gold medal is nearly home. Kasparov defeated Yermolinsky on board 1 (the US Champion has been alternating between boards 1 and 2, depending on the health of his teammates). Both boards 3 and 4 for the US had slight advantages (according to INSIDE CHESS), but were unable to convert the points and had to settle for draws.
Second place Ukraine kept its sole possession of that slot with a 2.5-1.5 victory over Bulgaria. Ukraine's 27 year old Captain, Vassily Ivanchuk, has been the talk of the tournament as he has scored something like 6.5/8 (I don't have the individual results from all rounds). Meanwhile, the USA is now tied with a number of teams, including Armenia 1, which defeated Croatia by 2.5-1.5 as well.
In addition to the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals, the finish order in the Olympiad also determines who will be invited to the European Team Championship, with 5 slots going to finishers here. This is keeping interest up in the close 3rd-7th grouping.
England beat Israel 2.5-1.5 to stay in this group, while Georgia made it in with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan. Iceland also scored 3 points against China, pushing that team down into a tie for 20th-25th position. The Chinese team had been the "Cinderella stars" of this event, being ranked 30th at the start and fighting their way as high as first at one point. After scoring only 7 points out of the last 4 rounds (a 43.75 percentage), the Chinese look like they will finish much closer to their rating.
Still, the race for the Bronze and the European Team slots isn't anywhere near settled yet: there are another 7 teams at 30.5, only one point behind Ukraine, and another 4 teams only half a point behind that. So the last round will have a number of important matches.
