Complete Team Standings
at the end of Round 10
As we enter the last quarter of the event, match-ups become more difficult for the organizers. More teams have already played each other, and so some individual matches may involve teams a point or more apart in the standings.
In the Russia-Bosnia-Herzegovina match-up, Bosnia-Herzegovina managed a 2-2 score against the Russian leaders. Although board #1 Sokolov fell to Kasparov in the PCA World Champion's first decisive game of the event, Board #4, Dizdarevic, managed to defeat the Russian #4, Bareev, for a 2-2 result, the best any team has done against Russia so far. Russia retained its sole possession of first when #2 Spain, suddenly in striking distance, was crushed by the Ukraine 3-1. None of the other top 10 teams managed better than an even score this round, and several fell back, so although there was again quite a bit of movement in and out of the 2nd-16th positions, Russia keeps a 3.5 lead on the rest of the teams.
Surprise medal contender China (ranked 30th at the start of the competition) manages a 2.5-1.5 victory over the much higher rated Swedish team, to stay in the group tied for 3rd place at 25 points. Hungary also defeated the USA 2.5-1.5 in this round. (USCF President Don Schultz reports that the USA team's fairly weak showing is due in part to traveler's illness in the form of a mild dysentery affecting several team members, including both Board #1 Boris Gulko and his wife Anna.) Meanwhile, Israel continued its strong surge with a 3-1 victory over the Netherlands. (Even with their disastrous 1-3 loss against the USA 3 rounds ago, Israel has now scored 11 out of a possible 16 for the last 4 rounds. Of course, Russia has scored 11.5/16 for the same four rounds...)
England and Armenia 1 followed the "draw with the strong teams" strategy and tied at 2-2.
Belarus had a perfect round with a 4-0 score against Tunisia. Lithuania also scored 4.0 this round, against Egypt and Barbados went 4-0 against Macao.
Note: Afghanistan, which just joined the tournament last round, has now won 7 out of a possible 8: a nice start, if a late one.
